Is IPL/Laser Hair Removal safe to carry out at home?

With so many home use Laser and IPL products out there now for you to buy in high street stores, we thought we should talk about the importance of safety with these types of treatments. Laser’s and IPL’s work by killing off the hair follicle, preventing any re-growth. This method uses highly concentrated light or laser and brings with it numerous risks and possible side effects.

Home use treatments have been manufactured to deliver the treatment at the same time as being ‘user friendly’ and ‘safe’. This means, that the home use options are considerably less stronger than any treatment you will receive in a professional clinic, and for this reason we would only ever advise their use for maintenance after a successful laser hair removal course within a professional establishment.

Although they are not as strong there are still important safety issues with using these treatments at home that must be taken seriously. A couple of the more high-risk side effects include but do not limit burning, bruising, reddening, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. All of these risks should be clearly understood and you should seek professional advice if needed before commencing any at home treatment.

Due to the nature of this procedure we recommend having your treatment at a professional clinic. The clinic and their laser practitioners understand the safety issues involved, are able to advice on things such as medical history and medication interference, and will know what to do should any side effects occur. For what may involve a little more cost, you will know that you are in safe experienced hands and you will get the best possible results from your treatment.

If you do decide to opt for an at home laser hair removal treatment for maintenance, do not hesitate to ask one of your practitioners or any professional for advice on how to do so safely. We are the ones with the knowledge and appropriate training and experience and will be happy to help you get the best, safest form of treatment.
